Avaaz’s petition against Glacier Discovery Walk puts ideology ahead of the facts

What distinguishes their campaign from other arguments about the Brewster Glacier Discovery Walk is that Avaaz has been extremely dishonest about the development and used a lot of faulty arguments and outright lies in order to drum up support for their point of views. And that, more than the project itself, is what I want to take a look at.

You have no idea what this internship could be costing me

I recently started an editorial and web internship with Alberta Venture, an Alberta business magazine. I’ve been there two days, and I’m in love. Being a journalist is a dream job for me, and magazine journalism is even higher on my list of “things I want to do when I grow up” than being a [...]

NextUp: Showtime

Unlike most radio hosts, the 39-year-old Gregor owns his own show through his company, Just A Game Productions Ltd. He leases a four-hour block of time from Edmonton’s Team 1260, hires his own cohosts, procures advertisements and creates the show’s content. “I’m sure 90 per cent of my listeners don’t know that I run my own show, which is OK,” Gregor says. But while he understands the business side of his profession, he’s still more comfortable talking about the best strategy on the ice than in the boardroom. “I never had any business background,” he says. It’s that very humility, confidence and honesty that forms the foundation of Gregor’s brand. After all, he isn’t selling a tangible product or service to his listeners. “I am my show,” Gregor says. “I’m selling myself.”

Don’t get uptight over “offensive” advertising

Let’s pretend for a moment this is relevant, instead of part of a year-old advertising campaign that no longer seems to be in active use. Opinion: Get Over Geeky Girls

They are a rare and mysterious breed, and much sought after: the sexy, geeky girl. It is, of course, miraculous for anyone to be female, a nerd, and moderately attractive. I mean, really — since when do girls like movies, video games, comic books, or other geeky things? In most cases, appreciating Star Wars and having breasts are mutually exclusive.

Feature: Dealing with depression

A recent study from researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC), published in the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, found that a large percentage of students who accessed campus health centres for a variety of ailments showed significant signs of depression. Students on five university campuses in Canada and the United States were screened for symptoms of depression; one in four of respondents were potentially depressed.

A&E: Berner fuses pop and politics

While songs about pimps and going to jail might not sound like typical subject matter for traditional Jewish folk songs, Geoff Berner would be inclined to say otherwise. According to the Vancouver-based folk musician, the irreverence, black humour, and scathing social commentary so prevalent on his new album Victory Party aren’t necessarily alien ideas in klezmer music.

Opinion: Society still needs to learn that women are not responsible for being sexually assaulted

Last month, a CBS foreign correspondent was beaten and sexually assaulted by a crowd of demonstrators in Egypt. The response was not concern or outrage — instead, commentators blamed the journalist, Lara Logan, for having been there in the first place.

Feature: Breaking it down, frame by frame

They spark the imagination and their stories have been the impetus for both films and childhood adventures. Thousands of comics line store walls, and the genre has garnered more popular interest in recent years. And, more surprisingly, comics have found an unexpected home in Alberta’s capital.
